La Gita

Italy is many things, but above all, it is about andare in gita.

A gita is a short trip—a much-needed break—whether it’s a day trip or a three-day getaway. That’s exactly what I was doing this spring, visiting my friends Licia and Andrea in Maremma, southern Tuscany.

They recently moved near the sea, to a quaint valley nestled among hills that slope down into the blue of the Mediterranean. Etruscan ruins and Roman forts remind of how nature can reclaim anything. The wind and the sea washed away the frenzy of the past few months, making room for wonderful conversations, good wine, and incredible cheese.
